2011 has seen a proliferation of friendly science competition in the form of Science Olympics supported by Youth Science Ontario. For the uninitiated, Science Olympics is a one-day event that requires students in grades 7 through 12 to apply their knowledge of science and engineering in creative, fun, and energetic ways.
This November has shown to be one of the busiest for Science Olympians, with a total of 5 events, in French and English, occurring across Ontario in Thunder Bay, Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, and Kenora. These events have impacted the lives of over 250 excitable high school students across northern Ontario.
With events like “Ident-i-frog”, “Superballs”, “Star Wars” and “Heavy Engineering”, secondary students are being asked to draw on their knowledge of all scientific spheres – biology, chemistry, physics and engineering – and apply it in fun and interesting ways.
Thank you to all the staff and volunteers at Lakehead University, Science North, Dynamic Earth and Algoma University, as well as our awards sponsor Hydro One. Your hard work and passion made these Science Olympics exciting, accessible and an enormous success. Congratulations!
