University of Ontario Institute of Technology

Youth Science Ontario Sponsor

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) has partnered with Youth Science Ontario in celebrating and promoting Ontario’s young scientists since 2005 as the exclusive university-sector partner of Youth Science Ontario and through sponsorship of the on-going UOIT Innovator Award.

The UOIT Innovator Award provides $100 per region given to one project for demonstrating the most innovative development, adaptation or use of technology in a science project at each regional science fair in Ontario.

In addition to providing significant funding to Youth Science Ontario’s on-going operations and its support of the Innovation Award, UOIT’s Faculty of Science continues to demonstrate its commitment to youth science through hands-on involvement. Dr. William Smith, Dean, Faculty of Science, has been a member of Youth Science Ontario’s Board of Directors since 2005.

Youth Science Ontario was also honoured to have Dr. Smith as a guest and speaker at our June 8, 2010 Showcase, where he presented an inspiring speech to students, family members and fellow guests. Dr. Rupinder Brar, a Physics lecturer in the Faculty of Science and the winner of TVO’s 2010 Big Ideas Best Lecturer Competition also generously volunteers his time as the Director of the Durham Regional Science Fair.

“UOIT believes that the activities supported by Youth Science Ontario are key to attracting more young people to such areas as science, technology and engineering which have become so important to today’s economy,” says Dr. Richard Marceau, provost and vice-president Academic, UOIT.

Founded in 2002, UOIT is a leading-edge learning environment and research institution having been placed on an influential list of Canada’s top 50 research institutions. Among its many accolades, UOIT is Ontario’s first laptop-based university, has one of the highest rates of professors with PhDs among Canadian universities, and established Canada’s first Bachelor degree programs in Nuclear Engineering  and Automotive Engineering as well as the first Master’s degree program in Information Technology Security. UOIT’s campus is located in the city of Oshawa, Ontario and is home to seven faculties, 6,500 undergraduate and graduate students (as of November 2009), an academic and non-academic staff of over 600, plus more than 4,200 alumni.

In recognition of its sponsorship and support, Youth Science Ontario is proud to identify UOIT as a key sponsor of Youth Science Ontario at all events, including our high-profile Annual Showcase. As a key sponsor, UOIT will continue to receive invitations to personally present its Innovator Award at any of the 30 regional science fairs and to speak at Youth Science Ontario events. Year-round recognition is extended through words of acknowledgement and placement of the university’s logo on Youth Science Ontario’s website, event posters, press releases, and printed material such as newsletters and promotional brochures.

On behalf of all the students who benefit from its support, Youth Science Ontario would like to sincerely thank UOIT for its continuing sponsorship.
