Team Ontario Success at ISEF!

Youth Science Ontario Success Story

Congratulations to eleven of Ontario’s finest young innovators who represented our province as part of Team Canada at the 2011 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). The event was held in Los Angeles from May 8th to May 13th.

The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF)—the world's largest pre-college science competition—provides an opportunity for the best young scientists from around the globe to share ideas, showcase cutting-edge science projects, and compete for over $4 million in awards and scholarships.

Team Ontario returned home with fantastic results:

Dheevesh Arulman (Mississauga) was awarded Second Place, Energy and Transportation for his project: Photoelectrochemical Approach to PEM Fuel Cells Using Hydrodynamic Voltammetry.

Adelina Corina Cozma (Richmond Hill) with her project: Growing Up 'In Sync': Connecting a Bridge to an Autistic Mind's World, captured three awards: Third Place, Behavioural and Social Sciences; First Place, America Psychological Association; and Second Place, Excellence in Bahavioural and Social Sciences. IIT College of Psychology.

Howard Feng (Richmond Hill) was awarded Second Place, Cellular and Molecular Biology for his project: Identification of Ezrin as a Colonic Substrate for Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase Sigma (σ).

Lauren Reid (Uxbridge) was awarded two awards: First Place, GE Energy and First Award, Society of Experimental Test Pilots for her project: Reducing the Cut-In Wind Speed of Wind Turbine Blades by Redirecting the Boundary Layer Airflows.

Janelle Tam & Vivienne Tam (Waterloo) were awarded Fourth Place, Engineering, Material and Bioengineering with their project: Cellulose Crystals Clean and Cure.

Grace Wang (London) was awarded Fourth Place, Medicine and Health Sciences for her project: Modulation of ERK5 in Inhibiting Breast Cancer Cell Migration and Invasion.

Youth Science Ontario would like to congratulate all ISEF Team Ontario students who represented Ontario’s strong pool of young innovators so well at this international event. Other Team Ontario members at ISEF were: Emma Graham of Ottawa, Michael Lemanski of Toronto, Lexie Penny of Grimsby and Megan Schlorff of Hanover.
